He had reportedly been suffering from a horrible bout with the flu and those with the condition are more vulnerable to complications due to the seizure disorder.
Prince’s death came as such a devastating shock, but he had been reportedly battling a nasty case of the flu recently. He was so sick that just six days before his untimely death, Prince’s plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Illinois in the middle of the night, where he was rushed to a local hospital.
Even though he was discharged the same day, the Centers for Disease Control notes that epileptics like Prince are susceptible to developing more severe complications from having the flu, so we’re sure hoping that the neurological disorder didn’t play a part in his death.
Prince revealed he had been born with the neurological disorder in 2009, when he told PBS‘Tavis Smiley that “I’ve never spoken about this before but I was born epileptic. I used to have seizures when I was young. My mother and father didn’t know what to do or how to handle it but they did the best they could with what little they had.” He said he developed his flashy persona to compensate for the illness, which led to his iconic fashion and music styles. Epilepsy is a chronic disorder with the most common symptom being recurrent, unprovoked seizures. It is treatable with medication, but it’s unclear if Prince was controlling his condition at the time he reportedly caught the flu.

It remains unclear if the same flu that resulted in his recent hospitalization is what caused Prince’s sudden death. He was was found unresponsive and not breathing inside an elevator when paramedics arrived to his suburban Minneapolis estate on April 21. The singer knew he was having health issues, as TMZ obtained a photograph of him visiting his local Walgreen’s just hours before his death. The employees there said he’d been a customer of the pharmacy for years, but he had visited four times in his final days, and looked very scarily frail on his last visit. Sadly whatever he was taking to try to make him better didn’t work.
