Plant-based diets may reduce risk of diabetes

It's well known that a diet high in plant foods, such as the Mediterranean diet, can reduce your risk of heart disease, colon cancer, and many other illnesses.
A recent study in PLOS Medicine shows that a plant-based diet may also lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Researchers at Harvard followed 200,000 health professionals for nearly 30 years. They found that people who ate mostly plants and those who ate high amounts of healthful plant foods (such as whole grains, veggies, legumes, vegetable oils and fruits and nuts), had a significantly lower risk of diabetes.
On the other hand, those who had a plant-based diet, but ate more refined grains, fruit juices, sweets and sweetened drinks, had an increased risk of diabetes.
Dr. John Swartzberg, editorial director of the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter, says based on this study, you don't have to give up a lot of foods to make a difference.
"The more change the better, but just a very modest change, one or two servings a day, would make an enormous difference in your risk for diabetes."
Dr. Swartzberg says a plant-based diet is one of the healthiest diets you can eat.
