Parents Talk Back: Are gluten-free diets for kids a good idea?

Sam: I am going to start eating gluten-free. I'd like to prepare all my meals for my family this way. We have a preschooler and grade-schooler. Is there any harm to feeding them a gluten-free diet, even if it is not medically required?
Dr. Berchelmann: There is no harm in allowing children to eat gluten-free as long as they are still eating a variety of foods and a balanced diet, but I would be concerned that your child might eat selectively and really limit his or her nutrition.
Remember that children, especially toddlers, really don't need many calories.  So they will wait-it-out for their favorite foods.  This is why toddlers are classically picky eaters.  One free cookie from the grocery store may be enough calories for them to skip your next well-prepared, balanced, gluten-free meal.
Aisha Sultan: I think if you just want to prepare healthier meals for your family, there's no harm in that. I'd be careful before making entire food groups off-limits (if there are no specific allergies or medical restrictions). You don't want to deprive your child of occasional treats.
Some people have found a gluten-free diet improves their overall health, even if it is not medically prescribed, but others just end up wasting money on expensive 'gluten-free' foods that really don't improve general health.
