Frequently US Navy Sailors were forced to stay on the ship while it was in the shipyard and had to work side by side with the shipyard workers. The difference between Veterans and shipyard workers in terms of daily life is that after a shipyard worker's shift, they got to go home. In most instances, the sailors were stationed on the ship being worked on, which resulted in around the clock exposure to asbestos. http://MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.ComMost families the Mesothelioma Victims Center talks to have a simple understanding that their husband or dad served in the US Navy; most are unaware that their loved one may have spent between six months to a year stationed at a navy shipyard. US Navy Veterans account for a very large percentage of total victims diagnosed with mesothelioma in the nation year after year. This is due to work conditions decades ago that exposed those in the Navy to higher-than-average asbestos exposure.
